We've been on the new platform for about 11 months now, and while most of us have settled in, specifically to the great commenting system, others lag behind. This post is meant to be a guide to new users and a refresher course for the more seasoned guests. First, for our newer users, take a look at the basic SB*Nation Welcome Guide. After that, read below for a more in-depth guide and specific (renewed) expectations for South Side Sox, specifically
South Side Sox isn't a message board. It isn't a talk radio call-in show. The headline at the top of the page reads "A Chicago White Sox Blog Community," and that's the most concise way I can describe this site. South Side Sox itself is a blog, one which has built a community feel to it over the last 4 years. And unlike most blogs that are talking at you, South Side Sox offers FanPosts and FanShots where you can drive the conversation.
Follow me after the jump for an extended guide into FanPosts and FanShots.

FanShots are quick posts, links, images or videos from around the internet. Aside from the commenting system, FanShots and the bookmarklet for easy creation of FanShots are my favorite features of South Side Sox.
Once you have a "Share on SB*Nation" button in your browser, you have one-click posting of FanShots at your fingertips. Clicking the button will bring up a dialog box like this
Just select the type of FanShot you wish to post, apply the proper tags (more later) and hit publish. Simple.
FanPosts are just like front page stories, except they're written by you, the average user. Select FanPosts, those deemed worthy by the crack editorial team at South Side Sox, will find their way to the front page.
Make it Relevant -- Your FanPost should relate to the White Sox or baseball in some way. If you want to talk about the Bulls or the Bears or Notre Dame football there are sites on SB*Nation for that. If you want to do nothing more than post a link to your site, you're probably a spammer, and should expect your FanPost to be swiftly removed. If all you want to do is post a link, try a FanShot.
I don't want to completely discourage Off-Topic FanPosting. Some of our most commented FanPosts have been the semi-weekly music threads. But if you're new, if you haven't made a FanPost before, your FanPost on Lovie Smith probably isn't going to be received very well.
Off-topic conversations happen all the time at SSS. Heck, half the comments in any given thread are off-topic. Other SB*Nation sites have a Daily Link Dump FanPost or some other form of daily off-topic conversation. I'm not against starting something like that on SSS, but nobody has taken the lead. I suspect because our comments sections are usually all over the map.
Make it Timely -- If the link you're posting is a day or two old, chances are it's been posted once or twice before either in the comments or FanShots (more later). Check to see if it's been posted before. Use our powerful search function.
If you do have some breaking news, post away. Even though we try, there's no way we can be the first to hear/read/see every piece of breaking White Sox news. That's where you can help. 1,100 sets of eyes and ears can
Use Proper Formatting -- You'd be amazed how much better your piece will be received if it's formatted properly. Proper formatting is like a killer profile pic on a dating site.
I'm not likely to read your profile if you're an ugly hag. Likewise, if I'm greeted by a wall of text in your FanPost, I'm probably not going to make it all the way through. Break it up. Make it more than one paragraph. Use the 'B' and 'I' buttons for bold and italic text, respectively.
The tech team at SB*Nation has built a powerful WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor, which I am unfortunately completely inexperienced at using. I code all of my entries by hand. However, If you know how to format using Microsoft word, you can make a perfectly formatted FanPost here at South Side Sox.
Give it a Descriptive Headline -- "South Side Sox Poll" may, in fact, be what you are posting, but it doesn't exactly inform us what the topic is about. Your headline should be informative, above all else, with bonus points for creativity.
Poor Headline: South Side Sox Poll
Good Headline: Should the White Sox Pursue Orlando Hudson?
Poor Headline: Orlando Hudson
Good Headline: Source: White Sox Express Interest in Orlando Hudson
Poor Headline: What Do You Guys Think of This?
Good Headline: Is Orlando Hudson an Option for White Sox?
To the right of text area in both FanPosts and FanShots you'll find the area for tagging your posts. Tagging is important because it helps your content show up in searches and in dynamically-rendered content areas, such as on a player page or in the new "More from South Side Sox" box at the bottom of each post. It helps increase your posts exposure.
Tagging is simple. Just type the topics of your post into the area cleverly labeled "tags." Use commas to separate tags.
Players and Teams have their own dedicated area, which will help link your posts to the proper Player and Team Pages. These fields auto complete, just begin typing the player's name and it should fill in.
You can also use the attach poll feature to, get this, attach a poll to your post. While the "Attach Event" option allows you to tie your post to a specific game. Clicking the "Attach Event" button will bring up a box that lists the Sox past and future games (spring training not included -- only games that count appear). Clicking the Add button will make sure you post appears on the page for that specific game, a feature that will become more clearly important in the very near future.
SouthSideSox is a community driven site. As such, users are able to express their thoughts and opinions in a FanPost, such as this one, which represents the views of this particular fan, but not necessarily the entire community or SouthSideSox editors.

I made this as a FanPost on purpose
I intend to bump it to the top of the FanPost list basically every time it drops off between now and the start of the season, and probably with slightly less frequency after that.
The Cheat - February 23, 2009
and if we rec it up so it just sticks in the rec'd fanpost section?

It only sticks there for 2 weeks
or until it gets knocked off by fresher rec’d content

But not more powers than me!
Unless Cheat Twitted him some new ones, or Facebooked the keys to the kingdom I can make his post disappear. But the he could undo it so what’s the point?

"Is Orlando Hudson an option for the White Sox?" is a terrible headline, too
Orlando Hudson is always an option for the White Sox.

Anyone want to explain how to re-size images
Gamethreads last season were littered with them, and while comical, tends to drag the loading time. It’s bad for a baseball thread because everyone usually comments at the same time on a big run or whatever. Smaller photos would be appreciated.

That such a contrived story full of plot holes could win. Enjoy seeing Pacino and DeNiro team up with Amitabh Bacchan in Garam Masala 2.
Ozzie Montana - February 23, 2009
ozzie, way to knock down our peoples yo ;)
but i recall jeeves saying that this was a great year for pictures, i agree..
onlysoxfaninboston - February 23, 2009
I'd say it was good because all the movies I hoped were great
Ended up really well done (Dark Knight, Iron Man, Tropic Thunder). But, the whole host of awards-season movies were underwhelming to me. But, I’m not the target demographic for a lot of the movies.
I liked Slumdog, but I didn’t think it was Best Picture worthy. Then again, would the Dark Knight have been a credible winner?
Ozzie Montana - February 23, 2009
i thought it was an entertaining movie
but that’s it…for me, the short list would include milk, slumdog, man on wire, chop shop, walle, with chop shop winning

Making South Side Sox Better: NO MORE MUSIC OR WIRE THREADS
got it.
Cheat, unless you don’t want me too – and really, i mean really, no offense taken if that’s the case – I will contribute a daily OT fanpost, that’s inspired by the OT comments from the main fanpost threads. Example headlines may include: Should larry invest in fucking gold right now? OR Which library is best suited for studying and meeting hot chicks on the UIUC campus?
If the end result is actually directing a majority of common OT comments that would otherwise be posted on a relevant White Sox fanpost on to the OT fanpost, it’s worth trying out. If it turns out ineffective, then it should stop.
onlysoxfaninboston - February 23, 2009
i don't like the idea.
larry - February 23, 2009
larry = cheat
i’m not kidding. can you just explain why, i’ll probably agree…
onlysoxfaninboston - February 23, 2009
i like the way things flow naturally around here.
more like a conversation.
larry - February 23, 2009
okay, i can dig that
if the OT stuff on the main threads aren’t a big deal to the main authority figures, then its no problem with me
onlysoxfaninboston - February 23, 2009
Please don't change the way things are.
I originally came here to read about white sox baseball but, over the course of a year or two, I’ve come to enjoy the “flow of the conversation”. It gives me insight into everyone’s personality and interest besides the white sox.
It isn’t that difficult to see what topic a conversation is on and skim down until it’s something your interested in.

i feel weird that my voice matters on this
idk, all the off topic stuff in the main threads is what i view as kind of our charm. it’s what sets us apart from a lot of the other baseball sites on SBN. i know its what got me into the site, as i don’t think i really contributed much of anything but OT crap and lard around here until like late november. it does make it a little easier to jump in.
U-God - February 23, 2009

homesickalien - February 23, 2009

how is SSS different? i really really have no idea.
onlysoxfaninboston - February 23, 2009
Well...
I’ve tried out BlogABull and Windy City Gridiron and they both suck. WCG is basically one guy talking to himself and it’s pretty pointless to read. BlogABull is FULL of people proposing trade idea after trade idea, even though the Bulls make like one trade a year. Now they also have FanPost after FanPost about whether Derrick Rose is gonna be the best player ever or the worst player ever.
I’ve also checked out a few of the opposing team’s game threads during the season and they never seem as enjoyable as ours. That might just be because I’m a Sox fan though.

i too check out all of the above
this one is by far the best, SCH has potential in terms of editor content – highly recommend the commit to the indian that they sell outside the stadium on game day. informative and entertaining. they’ve got back issues on the site for free. with that said, not much of a community. some guy has a beer of the night gimmick and then he just talks to himself in the comments.

it was the bad content that made it take forever to open a gamethread!
BTW, am I wrong in thinking that new FanPoster needs to be directed to this?

BTW, I am now on Bobby Jindal's e-mail blast list, I gather.
I am invited at least weekly as of late to fundraisers for him. He’s gearing up for 2012. You watch. Obama has set the bar for inexperience. (And I might throw some coin Bobby’s way.)
winningugly - February 24, 2009
He's just as crazy and Christian
Why not? Get that crazed chick out of the way, he’s your guy for 2012. Apparently he was selected to give the rebuttal to Obama’s economic speech?
Ozzie Montana - February 24, 2009
Yep. He's seriously a rising star.
winningugly - February 25, 2009
So was Tony Danza.
In that party, it’s a contest of the tallest midgets. Wake me in 8 years when the Obama administration is over.
Chiburb - February 25, 2009
You will be sleeping permanently by then.
Hard to believe that, at the very least, a state not previously known as a bastion of ethnic tolerance has elected the first Indian-American gov, and now he stands a decent shot at being the first Indian-American candidate for President in 2012.
Only in America. Not a bad place to ply your trade, Mr. Capitalist. (Or is it Mr. Das Kaptial?)
winningugly - February 25, 2009
You're talking Louisiana. They've historically elected idiots of all stripes.
Even Faux News panned last night’s Republican response.
Besides, there is NO way anyone but a white male could get elected president in this country!
;-)
Chiburb - February 25, 2009
Idiots, yes.
All white idiots, though.
winningugly - February 25, 2009
Not to rain on the Indian pride
But the incumbent governor was a moron, and he ran in a post-Katrina era. It’s just like after 8 years of Bush, any person who just acts like he knows what he’s doing will be elected. Plus, his skin is brown, but his principles and ideals are hardcore conservative.
Ozzie Montana - February 25, 2009
exactly mofo!

onlysoxfaninboston - February 25, 2009

damn, that was horrible. been telling my parents to pass the word to their indian friends not to vote for this guy if he’s on the ballot. as OM said, he’s crazy…
onlysoxfaninboston - February 25, 2009
He's young, and it's early.
Give the brother a few weeks after the election. Even Obama had 2 years to prep.
winningugly - February 25, 2009
It isn't about the prep, it's about the message
This sums it up pretty well:
Regarding Jindal’s speech last night, I am seeing a fair amount of negative comments on the delivery. While the delivery was atrocious – really atrocious – I think this misses the more important problem.
Admittedly I was also struggling to get past the “Kenneth the Page” thing, but what really struck me was the poor substance of the speech. To my ear, it sounded like a complete rehash of the Republican talking points we have been hearing since Reagan. It might be true that Jindal is a smart, honest guy and that he really believes excessive government is the problem, but Republicans just don’t have any credibility with this argument right now.
Unfortunately for Jindal (and the country), Republicans used that same argument for decades while the intrusiveness of our government and the country’s deficits continued to grow at unprecedented rates. His party used the same arguments while they happily used the government to transfer obscene amounts of public wealth to a small sliver of the population and completely trash our economy.
Simply put, his party has been the one controlling our government for a long, long time. The problem isn’t government, it’s Republican government – and everyone knows it.
Chiburb - February 25, 2009
i'm still not voting for the guy because i don't share his principles
but i agree with chiburb on this one wu, that it’s about the message. yeah obama is inexperienced, as was bush before him, but his message resonated with voters. jindal has to come up with a different message to even be remotely competitive.
onlysoxfaninboston - February 25, 2009
Sure,
that sums it up well . . . if you like opinions and not the facts of history. flagged.

We’ve got a game today!
Chiburb - February 25, 2009
thatshortkid - February 25, 2009
i don't know who chiburb is quoting
but i’m pretty sure that’s a very popular opinion, your impression of its veracity notwithstanding. i have no idea what a cogent alternative to Obama’s plan looks like and it’s not like the Right lacks for a voice in the media or blogosphere. consequently, the Obama view dominates in the vacuum. i think that means there are more errors on the margins for the opposition to pick at, but if it never adds up into anything material…
colintj - February 26, 2009
has Obama ever once bombed a public speaking gig
on the national stage? the narrative going around now is that he’s pretty brilliant but lately been giving in to stupid advisors trying to craft his national image. and that shit, in content and delivery, was beyond brutal.
who wrote that thing anyway?
colintj - February 26, 2009
It was ok
He’s got the backing of the freaks like Limbaugh, so that’s half the battle for the Republicans. He’ll own all the conservative students who will be desperate for their Obamarama. Plus, the irony of this t-shirt is just delicious.

Ozzie Montana - February 25, 2009
Not even the conservatives liked it:
The reviews have been coming in on Bobby Jindal’s response speech to President Obama’s address to Congress, and he’s getting a lot of negative feedback ranging from the content to the awkward delivery — and that’s from a lot of conservative outlets.
David Brooks was decidedly nonplussed:
“But to come up at this moment in history with a stale ‘government is the problem,’ ‘we can’t trust the federal government’ — it’s just a disaster for the Republican Party,” said Brooks.
Brit Hume: “The speech read a lot better than it sounded. This was not Bobby Jindal’s greatest oratorical moment.”
Nina Easton: “The delivery was not exactly terrific.”
Charles Krauthammer: “Jindal didn’t have a chance. He follows Obama, who in making speeches, is in a league of his own. He’s in a Reagan-esque league. … [Jindal] tried the best he could.”
Juan Williams: “It came off as amateurish, and even the tempo in which he spoke was sing-songy. He was telling stories that seemed very simplistic and almost childish.”
Ramesh Ponnuru:
I thought his delivery was weak. The content will play well with the party base but seems unlikely to expand it…That said, it is hard for anybody to come out well from responding to a presidential speech to a joint session of Congress.
Kathryn Jean Lopez tried to play up the positive elements, but admitted there were problems:
Jindal does exude a practical hope, rooted in things that work. And he forces the point that politics should be about ideas — competing ideas — and that the best ones should win.
You can tell, though, that he’s used to just speaking (because he can) and not delivering prepared speeches.
And here’s Jim Geraghty:
Maybe Jindal Should Have Just Done a Q & A
Like Ramesh and Kathryn, I thought the text of Jindal’s argument was fine, but the governor’s delivery just wasn’t working for me. He seemed to have somehow figured out a way to speak too quickly and too slow at the same time. (A couple readers, who wanted to rave about him, agreed, using terms like “robotic” and “Mr. Rogers.”) His remarks sounded like they were being read aloud, not spoken naturally.
It came as something of a shock, considering how well Jindal performed on Meet the Press and at the White House meeting yesterday.
Chiburb - February 25, 2009
i also read that the Democratic sheriff he mentioned
is a serious racist. so there’s that too.

From what I’ve read he normally doesn’t talk like he did in that response, but c’mon, you gotta admit the Kenneth the Page comparisons are funny.
