Making South Side Sox Better: A Guide to Better Posting

We've been on the new platform for about 11 months now, and while most of us have settled in, specifically to the great commenting system, others lag behind. This post is meant to be a guide to new users and a refresher course for the more seasoned guests. First, for our newer users, take a look at the basic SB*Nation Welcome Guide. After that, read below for a more in-depth guide and specific (renewed) expectations for South Side Sox, specifically

South Side Sox isn't a message board. It isn't a talk radio call-in show. The headline at the top of the page reads "A Chicago White Sox Blog Community," and that's the most concise way I can describe this site. South Side Sox itself is a blog, one which has built a community feel to it over the last 4 years. And unlike most blogs that are talking at you, South Side Sox offers FanPosts and FanShots where you can drive the conversation.

Follow me after the jump for an extended guide into FanPosts and FanShots.

Star-divide

FanShots

FanShots are quick posts, links, images or videos from around the internet. Aside from the commenting system, FanShots and the bookmarklet for easy creation of FanShots are my favorite features of South Side Sox.

When Should You Post a FanShot?

  • Whenever you find a link, a quote, a video (etc.) around the internet that you think the South Side Sox community will enjoy.
  • When you don't have any commentary to add other than your link, vid or quote.
  • When you can't meet the 75 word minimum for a FanPost

How Do You Post a FanShot?

  1. Click "New FanShot" -- Seems simple, right? While logged in, visit any page of South Side Sox and click the handy "New FanShot" button. Enter the link or pic URL in the proper
  2. Use the FanShot Bookmarklet -- Clicking and dragging the "Share on SB*Nation" button (shown below) to your bookmarks bar (the area under your address bar in your browser) will allow you to post to South Side Sox quickly and easily while browsing the internet. Fsbookmarklet_medium

Once you have a "Share on SB*Nation" button in your browser, you have one-click posting of FanShots at your fingertips. Clicking the button will bring up a dialog box like this

    Fanshot_medium

Just select the type of FanShot you wish to post, apply the proper tags (more later) and hit publish. Simple.

FanPosts

FanPosts are just like front page stories, except they're written by you, the average user. Select FanPosts, those deemed worthy by the crack editorial team at South Side Sox, will find their way to the front page.

What makes a good FanPost?

  • Make it Substantial -- When I say substantial, I don't mean it has to be dissertation or manifesto. But if you see the dreaded 75 word warning, it's either time to put some more thought into your FanPost or trash it all together. Because if you can't fill up 75 words on a topic, what you have is not a FanPost; it's a comment, or maybe a FanShot.
  • Make it Relevant -- Your FanPost should relate to the White Sox or baseball in some way. If you want to talk about the Bulls or the Bears or Notre Dame football there are sites on SB*Nation for that. If you want to do nothing more than post a link to your site, you're probably a spammer, and should expect your FanPost to be swiftly removed. If all you want to do is post a link, try a FanShot.

I don't want to completely discourage Off-Topic FanPosting. Some of our most commented FanPosts have been the semi-weekly music threads. But if you're new, if you haven't made a FanPost before, your FanPost on Lovie Smith probably isn't going to be received very well.

Off-topic conversations happen all the time at SSS. Heck, half the comments in any given thread are off-topic. Other SB*Nation sites have a Daily Link Dump FanPost or some other form of daily off-topic conversation. I'm not against starting something like that on SSS, but nobody has taken the lead. I suspect because our comments sections are usually all over the map.

  • Make it Timely -- If the link you're posting is a day or two old, chances are it's been posted once or twice before either in the comments or FanShots (more later). Check to see if it's been posted before. Use our powerful search function.

If you do have some breaking news, post away. Even though we try, there's no way we can be the first to hear/read/see every piece of breaking White Sox news. That's where you can help. 1,100 sets of eyes and ears can

  • Make it Coherent -- I've been known to make more than the occasional grammatical mistake, and I haven't met a sentence I couldn't drop a few extra commas on to turn it into a run-on. But my rants are generally easily digestible. Why?
    • I use proper spelling (most of the time)-- You're not sending a text message. There's no need 4 U 2 use "time saving" abbreviations which only lessen the value of your post. It's like writing a position paper in crayon.
    • I use punctuation -- You wouldn't stand up and attempt to give a speech in one breath, and you shouldn't try to make your FanPost one big sentence that never ends.
    • I use multiple paragraphs -- There is something about reading text on the internet that makes reading a large block of text unpleasant and occasionally difficult. The ENTER key can be your friend.
  • Use Proper Formatting -- You'd be amazed how much better your piece will be received if it's formatted properly. Proper formatting is like a killer profile pic on a dating site.

I'm not likely to read your profile if you're an ugly hag. Likewise, if I'm greeted by a wall of text in your FanPost, I'm probably not going to make it all the way through. Break it up. Make it more than one paragraph. Use the 'B' and 'I' buttons for bold and italic text, respectively.

The tech team at SB*Nation has built a powerful WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor, which I am unfortunately completely inexperienced at using. I code all of my entries by hand. However, If you know how to format using Microsoft word, you can make a perfectly formatted FanPost here at South Side Sox.

    • Start by opening Word.
    • Write your post completely in Word, making all your formatting adjustments there.
    • Highlight and Copy your work.
    • Click New FanPost
    • Click the "Paste From Word" icon (upper right icon in the WYSIWYG editor)
    • Paste your content into the dialog box.
  • Give it a Descriptive Headline -- "South Side Sox Poll" may, in fact, be what you are posting, but it doesn't exactly inform us what the topic is about. Your headline should be informative, above all else, with bonus points for creativity.

    Examples:

Poor Headline: South Side Sox Poll
Good Headline: Should the White Sox Pursue Orlando Hudson?

    Poor Headline: Orlando Hudson
Good Headline: Source: White Sox Express Interest in Orlando Hudson

Poor Headline: What Do You Guys Think of This?
Good Headline: Is Orlando Hudson an Option for White Sox?

  • Tag it up -- Keep reading

Tagging

Ssstagging_medium

To the right of text area in both FanPosts and FanShots you'll find the area for tagging your posts. Tagging is important because it helps your content show up in searches and in dynamically-rendered content areas, such as on a player page or in the new "More from South Side Sox" box at the bottom of each post. It helps increase your posts exposure.

Tagging is simple. Just type the topics of your post into the area cleverly labeled "tags." Use commas to separate tags.

Players and Teams have their own dedicated area, which will help link your posts to the proper Player and Team Pages. These fields auto complete, just begin typing the player's name and it should fill in.

You can also use the attach poll feature to, get this, attach a poll to your post. While the "Attach Event" option allows you to tie your post to a specific game. Clicking the "Attach Event" button will bring up a box that lists the Sox past and future games (spring training not included -- only games that count appear). Clicking the Add button will make sure you post appears on the page for that specific game, a feature that will become more clearly important in the very near future.

SouthSideSox is a community driven site. As such, users are able to express their thoughts and opinions in a FanPost, such as this one, which represents the views of this particular fan, but not necessarily the entire community or SouthSideSox editors.

I made this as a FanPost on purpose

I intend to bump it to the top of the FanPost list basically every time it drops off between now and the start of the season, and probably with slightly less frequency after that.

and if we rec it up so it just sticks in the rec'd fanpost section?
It only sticks there for 2 weeks

or until it gets knocked off by fresher rec’d content

I'm gonna try to write a Fanpost to knock your shit out!!

Actually, I mean to say thank you, this is a good post.

HowTo: Posting Pics and Links

http://www.lookoutlanding.com/2009/2/7/752841/ll-howto-posting-pics-and

That was my next step

but I had gotten pretty damn long already

I was going to say something about that...

You should mention something about keeping Fanposts relatively short and to the point.
Who wants to read a bunch of fucking blathering?

;)

hahahaha. joke, right?
hence the wink, stupid.
if the SBNation IT crew can give us a UI option for the target attribute in anchor tags

can’t they do the same for changing the size attributes in image tags?

Now that that's been posted, will Bhoov come back ?

waiting for the Chris Getz interview
damn colin, even Fearless Leader is crackin on you
You know how we never let inside jokes die around here?

colin is never going to live that one down.
Big big big big big ball right between the legs.

This blog community is not forgetting.

the solicitation for questions
the “i’ve done it, but didn’t write it up; wu is old” thread
and the “no seriously, guys, just give me some more time” comment.

¿WTF happened after that?

some bullshit about a tape recorder not working.
i commented a while ago in some post.

i fucked up the recording. c’est la vie.

i see great success in your future.
a year+ later, i think this comment stands the test of time.
I rec'd it yesterday as a matter of fact.
Wiz, this has your name all over it.

Effin’ stimulus package post. Fer Chrissakes. Cheat and larry have just had enough.

you have more moderating powers than me.

perhaps you mean “cheat has just had enough – he’s sending larry to wiz’s mom’s basement to kidnap wiz and send him to china.”

But not more powers than me!

Unless Cheat Twitted him some new ones, or Facebooked the keys to the kingdom I can make his post disappear. But the he could undo it so what’s the point?
Btw, you sound like you’re envious of WU’s abilities. Cool.
Say goodnight Gracie!
MaƱana.

I'm 90% sure Larry has the power as well

It’s probably best to keep him the dark though ;)

i can't delete comments.
I don't think Chiburb can either

he can only “hide” them

well, whatever euphemism you want to apply, pretty sure i can't do it.
I would tend to censor myself before others,

as I have a Libertarian bent. But I’da cut SSH off at the fucking knees. It has to be a pretty extreme annoyance or jarring incompetence/irrlevenace for me to cloak someone.

Although larry’s getting close. ;)

i'll cut off your cock-grabbing fingers if you touch one of my posts.
I always knew...

you thought of your posts as an extension of your cock! Egomaniac.

(clearly)

no. i prefer the less passive aggressive method.
i believe the past tense of "twitter" is "twattered". judges?

Nicely done. I had to go to full site version to "continue"

Not bad for a tombstone…

I can't wait...

til I have something relevant to FanShot/FanPost! It’s been so long. Of course, I can barely think of anything to comment about at this point, so I might have to stretch myself out first. Maybe do some virtual long tossing.

Added the Orlando Hudson Memorial Bullet Point
"Is Orlando Hudson an option for the White Sox?" is a terrible headline, too

Orlando Hudson is always an option for the White Sox.

Anyone want to explain how to re-size images

Gamethreads last season were littered with them, and while comical, tends to drag the loading time. It’s bad for a baseball thread because everyone usually comments at the same time on a big run or whatever. Smaller photos would be appreciated.

Sure, your people win 8 Oscars

and you suddenly become an expert on video.

Not their fault this was such a shitty crop of Best Picture nominees

That such a contrived story full of plot holes could win. Enjoy seeing Pacino and DeNiro team up with Amitabh Bacchan in Garam Masala 2.

ozzie, way to knock down our peoples yo ;)

but i recall jeeves saying that this was a great year for pictures, i agree..

I'd say it was good because all the movies I hoped were great

Ended up really well done (Dark Knight, Iron Man, Tropic Thunder). But, the whole host of awards-season movies were underwhelming to me. But, I’m not the target demographic for a lot of the movies.

I liked Slumdog, but I didn’t think it was Best Picture worthy. Then again, would the Dark Knight have been a credible winner?

i thought it was an entertaining movie

but that’s it…for me, the short list would include milk, slumdog, man on wire, chop shop, walle, with chop shop winning

see wiz's comment above
Making South Side Sox Better: NO MORE MUSIC OR WIRE THREADS

got it.

Cheat, unless you don’t want me too – and really, i mean really, no offense taken if that’s the case – I will contribute a daily OT fanpost, that’s inspired by the OT comments from the main fanpost threads. Example headlines may include: Should larry invest in fucking gold right now? OR Which library is best suited for studying and meeting hot chicks on the UIUC campus?

If the end result is actually directing a majority of common OT comments that would otherwise be posted on a relevant White Sox fanpost on to the OT fanpost, it’s worth trying out. If it turns out ineffective, then it should stop.

i don't like the idea.
larry = cheat

i’m not kidding. can you just explain why, i’ll probably agree…

i like the way things flow naturally around here.

more like a conversation.

okay, i can dig that

if the OT stuff on the main threads aren’t a big deal to the main authority figures, then its no problem with me

Please don't change the way things are.

I originally came here to read about white sox baseball but, over the course of a year or two, I’ve come to enjoy the “flow of the conversation”. It gives me insight into everyone’s personality and interest besides the white sox.
It isn’t that difficult to see what topic a conversation is on and skim down until it’s something your interested in.

got it yo
though it would be cool if you could come up with some other kind of series for fanposts
like girls gone wild LAR edition?
indeed
how old are you 'son'?
20
it may be best then if i don't share my acid flashbacks of UIUC with you
save em for the meet-up this summer
chambana scars don't heal.
no, but the severe bruising

of repeated whacks will hide them. nothing like have a repeated drinking bruise on your knee. that town almost killed me.

aw cmon

if this post about relevant topics on sss needs anything its an acid flashback story.

ill even match yours. do you want the chicago fire dept came to my friends apartment when we were all tripping acid at 4am at uic or the i fought the charleston police force at eiu on mescaline?

what is this, we may as well compare our length of our belts

were you in the latin kings too?

Vice Lords.
i dont bang i rock the good rhymes

and my belt size is growing about an inch a year unfortunately.

WU, weren't you crew chief for Guardian Angels back in the day?
Me and Curt Sliwa, baby.

Like Bobbies in England. Sans weapons.

hmm

this is going to resurface every year, eh?

guess I have to cancel my run for office.

The Internet is forever.
I like to think of this place as the class of the cool teacher who lets you swear

and talk about sports sometimes, too.

could not agree more
I'm indifferent

I wanted a Daily OT thread before…

we’ve developed our own flow now — We can change or we can stay the same, I don’t really care

everyone knows the hos are at the UGL
see cheat's comment above yours, would you rather post about UGL hos on a white sox fanpost, or an OT fanpost?
i feel weird that my voice matters on this

idk, all the off topic stuff in the main threads is what i view as kind of our charm. it’s what sets us apart from a lot of the other baseball sites on SBN. i know its what got me into the site, as i don’t think i really contributed much of anything but OT crap and lard around here until like late november. it does make it a little easier to jump in.

I don't think your voice matters on this topic. No more than anyone else's...this ain't no manager's meeting. OSFIB just asked your opinion.

Power-tripper.

:)

oh you were uninformed?

cheat is gonna start charging membership fees so we can build statues of us bottom-of-the-site folks. they will be glorious.

No, I don't hear anything....Cheat doesn't like me cuz I don't have a penis, remember? I'm sure I'll be the one who gets to polish your statues or something.
how much does a statue polishing normally go for at the ports?

i need to budget my SSS membership fee

Ask MM. He hoarded all my menus and I can't keep that shit straight.
i believe the past tense of "hoard" is whoredid". judges?
I would also like to know

how much it is for a “statue polishing”?

in these recessionary times hsa has begun to offer a price scheme reflective of statue size.

which would mean you could probably get a real gem of a deal.

excellent

and yes whoredid

it's like riding a good-looking time machine.
who the fuck are you to refer to me as OSFIB

;-)

fyi, making a trip to seattle first week of april to see my sis. she drives a hummer.

sweet! Let me know as it gets closer...we should meet up around Safeco for a beer (their opening day is the 8th, iirc).

That’s too bad about your sister…

I ain't Cheat neither....

but I like how things go now.
More natural.

An OT thread seems like it would go downhill real fast given the zealous nature of this crowd.

It’s a good idea, and it may work on other SB Nations sites, but why fix it if it ain’t broke here?

i don't visit other SB sites

how is SSS different? i really really have no idea.

Well...

I’ve tried out BlogABull and Windy City Gridiron and they both suck. WCG is basically one guy talking to himself and it’s pretty pointless to read. BlogABull is FULL of people proposing trade idea after trade idea, even though the Bulls make like one trade a year. Now they also have FanPost after FanPost about whether Derrick Rose is gonna be the best player ever or the worst player ever.

I’ve also checked out a few of the opposing team’s game threads during the season and they never seem as enjoyable as ours. That might just be because I’m a Sox fan though.

blogabull is OK, but the group think in the comments section makes this place like like a google leadership summit
I've also tried blog a bull, wcg, and second city hockey.

It’s been very hard getting into the scenes there. This is home base for me…. I check it when I sign on/off the internet and, when i am in between sights.

i too check out all of the above

this one is by far the best, SCH has potential in terms of editor content – highly recommend the commit to the indian that they sell outside the stadium on game day. informative and entertaining. they’ve got back issues on the site for free. with that said, not much of a community. some guy has a beer of the night gimmick and then he just talks to himself in the comments.

a lot of the baseball ones don't seem to have nearly as active of communities as we do

and seem lucky to get past around 50 comments or so a topic

everyone already knows that club UGL is the best one for that
apparently i forgot that i posted this over a year ago

nice to know i haven’t changed

that is HILARIOOUS.
CC Sabathia Smuggles Small Child Into Spring Training

http://deadspin.com/5158508/cc-sabathia-smuggles-small-child-into-spring-training

Doing the "David Wells Workout" apparently
nice brewer uniform!
j/k what a lard!

he will for sure go on the DL this year. Dumb move by the Yankees to sign this choker!

yeah what a choker

he totally wasn’t responsible for carrying the Brewers into the post-season

and what did he do when he got there?
pitched just as poorly as every pitcher on the team not named David Bush

and only getting three hits behind you doesn’t help you win usually

ZzZzzZZZZ

talk to me when the season starts… this is boring

U-God

I will sit here and chill listening to the new Dr. Dre feat. TI and Nas. Holler back once you look those stats up and I will put you onto some music.

I think that's Uribe under his top.....
All this talk of lard and OTs and excessive picture-posting got me really jazzed for game threads.

i wish obama didn't throw like a girl.
i've always defined throwing like a girl

as leading with the wrong foot.

that's actually pretty good
I wish he wasn't left-handed.

And I wish he didn’t abuse kitties.

i wish you didn't act like a girl.
i know you're not talking to me.
That definately looks like a soft toss to me.

I’ve got 50/50 odds that he bounces first pitch the next time he throws one out at the cell.

That doesn't make any sense!
Bad mechanics.
he throws like a girl. all arms it with no body rotation whatsoever.
coop can fix that
coop!

nice work on the shrinking
still don't get it what's the big deal about picture sizes

small images suck, those two girls look like crap now for instance

And Mr. Cooper looks like Urkel.
super large sucks, but yeah, that is too small...

something like 300×300 limit is probably reasonable for both screen and file size.

maybe his jacket was too tight
What was this year's excuse, apologist?

He threw like a gir…He threw like a retard.

dont make me un-rec your year old begging for green old man!
Throws like someone who isn't a US citizen

Where is JoeCoolMan to get the scoop?

I have to say I love that the natural commentary of this series of pictures, went to his mechanics and rotation, etc....

He’s throwing a snowball, fer chrissakes.

But yeah…he better fix that form before strutting out to the mound on Opening Day (if that actually happens). How embarrassing.

we were right too!

they didnt even put his girl throw on TV during the all-star game.

facepalmingly so true....
He'd need 3 relay men with that arm strength......outdoing Manny ramirez
Why would I think Obama isn't a US citizen?
reply button fail.
what kind of crap internet do you guys have

that you have image loading issues?

I always thought...

it was the bad content that made it take forever to open a gamethread!

BTW, am I wrong in thinking that new FanPoster needs to be directed to this?

Not me, but the poor whites who may still have dial-up

Because they spent their paychecks on whiskey.

For you, OM:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123537861516146983.html

"Poor people complain they are poor"
BTW, I am now on Bobby Jindal's e-mail blast list, I gather.

I am invited at least weekly as of late to fundraisers for him. He’s gearing up for 2012. You watch. Obama has set the bar for inexperience. (And I might throw some coin Bobby’s way.)

He's just as crazy and Christian

Why not? Get that crazed chick out of the way, he’s your guy for 2012. Apparently he was selected to give the rebuttal to Obama’s economic speech?

Yep. He's seriously a rising star.
So was Tony Danza.

In that party, it’s a contest of the tallest midgets. Wake me in 8 years when the Obama administration is over.

You will be sleeping permanently by then.

Hard to believe that, at the very least, a state not previously known as a bastion of ethnic tolerance has elected the first Indian-American gov, and now he stands a decent shot at being the first Indian-American candidate for President in 2012.

Only in America. Not a bad place to ply your trade, Mr. Capitalist. (Or is it Mr. Das Kaptial?)

You're talking Louisiana. They've historically elected idiots of all stripes.

Even Faux News panned last night’s Republican response.

Besides, there is NO way anyone but a white male could get elected president in this country!

;-)

Idiots, yes.

All white idiots, though.

Not to rain on the Indian pride

But the incumbent governor was a moron, and he ran in a post-Katrina era. It’s just like after 8 years of Bush, any person who just acts like he knows what he’s doing will be elected. Plus, his skin is brown, but his principles and ideals are hardcore conservative.

exactly mofo!
Nothing wrong with being conservative. Really.

Can’t we all just get along? Fer Vishu’s sake.

hey you opos, i get along with conservatives like yourself (i hope), just fine

my brother out-law is a reaganite, but family is family you know.

you got some burdensome ass crackers in your family?
that's pretty funny yo
i just saw the clips of his performance

damn, that was horrible. been telling my parents to pass the word to their indian friends not to vote for this guy if he’s on the ballot. as OM said, he’s crazy…

He's young, and it's early.

Give the brother a few weeks after the election. Even Obama had 2 years to prep.

It isn't about the prep, it's about the message

This sums it up pretty well:

Regarding Jindal’s speech last night, I am seeing a fair amount of negative comments on the delivery. While the delivery was atrocious – really atrocious – I think this misses the more important problem.
Admittedly I was also struggling to get past the “Kenneth the Page” thing, but what really struck me was the poor substance of the speech. To my ear, it sounded like a complete rehash of the Republican talking points we have been hearing since Reagan. It might be true that Jindal is a smart, honest guy and that he really believes excessive government is the problem, but Republicans just don’t have any credibility with this argument right now.

Unfortunately for Jindal (and the country), Republicans used that same argument for decades while the intrusiveness of our government and the country’s deficits continued to grow at unprecedented rates. His party used the same arguments while they happily used the government to transfer obscene amounts of public wealth to a small sliver of the population and completely trash our economy.

Simply put, his party has been the one controlling our government for a long, long time. The problem isn’t government, it’s Republican government – and everyone knows it.

i'm still not voting for the guy because i don't share his principles

but i agree with chiburb on this one wu, that it’s about the message. yeah obama is inexperienced, as was bush before him, but his message resonated with voters. jindal has to come up with a different message to even be remotely competitive.

Sure,

that sums it up well . . . if you like opinions and not the facts of history. flagged.

hee. enjoy your irrelevant Southern Regional Party.
Not the place for that discussion

I could provide a similar opinion from the other side as well.

Agreed - treading a bit close to the edge.

Baseball rules in late Feb. If it was December and we had dead air we could beat this to death but plenty is going on without getting overly politicized.

The free-speech guy is getting ready to cloak here…

OK, WU. You're right. I'll quit.

We’ve got a game today!

i don't know who chiburb is quoting

but i’m pretty sure that’s a very popular opinion, your impression of its veracity notwithstanding. i have no idea what a cogent alternative to Obama’s plan looks like and it’s not like the Right lacks for a voice in the media or blogosphere. consequently, the Obama view dominates in the vacuum. i think that means there are more errors on the margins for the opposition to pick at, but if it never adds up into anything material…

has Obama ever once bombed a public speaking gig

on the national stage? the narrative going around now is that he’s pretty brilliant but lately been giving in to stupid advisors trying to craft his national image. and that shit, in content and delivery, was beyond brutal.

who wrote that thing anyway?

It was ok

He’s got the backing of the freaks like Limbaugh, so that’s half the battle for the Republicans. He’ll own all the conservative students who will be desperate for their Obamarama. Plus, the irony of this t-shirt is just delicious.

Not even the conservatives liked it:

The reviews have been coming in on Bobby Jindal’s response speech to President Obama’s address to Congress, and he’s getting a lot of negative feedback ranging from the content to the awkward delivery — and that’s from a lot of conservative outlets.

David Brooks was decidedly nonplussed:
“But to come up at this moment in history with a stale ‘government is the problem,’ ‘we can’t trust the federal government’ — it’s just a disaster for the Republican Party,” said Brooks.

Brit Hume: “The speech read a lot better than it sounded. This was not Bobby Jindal’s greatest oratorical moment.”

Nina Easton: “The delivery was not exactly terrific.”

Charles Krauthammer: “Jindal didn’t have a chance. He follows Obama, who in making speeches, is in a league of his own. He’s in a Reagan-esque league. … [Jindal] tried the best he could.”

Juan Williams: “It came off as amateurish, and even the tempo in which he spoke was sing-songy. He was telling stories that seemed very simplistic and almost childish.”
Ramesh Ponnuru:

I thought his delivery was weak. The content will play well with the party base but seems unlikely to expand it…That said, it is hard for anybody to come out well from responding to a presidential speech to a joint session of Congress.
Kathryn Jean Lopez tried to play up the positive elements, but admitted there were problems:

Jindal does exude a practical hope, rooted in things that work. And he forces the point that politics should be about ideas — competing ideas — and that the best ones should win.

You can tell, though, that he’s used to just speaking (because he can) and not delivering prepared speeches.
And here’s Jim Geraghty:

Maybe Jindal Should Have Just Done a Q & A
Like Ramesh and Kathryn, I thought the text of Jindal’s argument was fine, but the governor’s delivery just wasn’t working for me. He seemed to have somehow figured out a way to speak too quickly and too slow at the same time. (A couple readers, who wanted to rave about him, agreed, using terms like “robotic” and “Mr. Rogers.”) His remarks sounded like they were being read aloud, not spoken naturally.
It came as something of a shock, considering how well Jindal performed on Meet the Press and at the White House meeting yesterday.

i also read that the Democratic sheriff he mentioned

is a serious racist. so there’s that too.

This video was too funny not to pass up
